The baby goes on Blair's health insurance — Blair owns verification and post-birth enrollment. This is a qualifying life event, which opens a special enrollment window. The mechanics are simple; the deadline is not negotiable. Here's the full checklist.

Confirm now (action 1), not in January

The exact window: commonly 30 days from birth — but "commonly" isn't your plan. Get Blair's plan's real number in writing. Working target on the calendar: Friday, January 8, 2027 (~30 days after Dec 9). If the plan allows 60 days, you have margin; if it's 30, Jan 8 is the wall.
How to enroll: HR portal, benefits phone line, or insurer direct — get the specific path, not "call HR."
Effective date: coverage should retroact to the date of birth — confirm this explicitly, because the hospital bills for the baby's first days land here.
Premium change: what the per-paycheck cost becomes with +1 dependent.

Documents you'll need

Birth certificate (hospital worksheet → county record; takes days to weeks — ask whether enrollment can begin with the hospital's proof of birth before the certificate arrives).
Social Security number — applied for at the hospital via the birth-certificate worksheet; the card takes weeks. Same question: can enrollment start without it?
Both parents' IDs and Blair's member ID.

Don't forget

Pediatrician must be in-network. Cross-check Children's Healthcare Associates (or the final choice) against Blair's plan now — an out-of-network first visit in week one is an avoidable bill.
Dental/vision: decide whether the baby needs anything beyond medical (usually no for a newborn, but confirm the option exists).
FSA elections: the birth may allow mid-year FSA changes — ask HR while you're on the call.
Keep every confirmation number. Enrollment confirmations go in the baby-documents folder, digital + paper.

Put two calendar reminders on the shared calendar: one for Dec 28 (start enrollment — don't wait for the SSN card) and one for Jan 5 (verify it's processed, three days before the working deadline). Deadlines this close to the holidays need redundancy.
